The exam costs $105 and is available over 310 days a year at over 550 psi/LaserGrade Testing Centers located throughout North America and overseas. The ExCPT consists of 110 multiple-choice questions (100 scored). It lasts for two hours and includes an exit survey at the end.
The ExCPT questions fall under the following three general areas:

- General technician duties; federal & state law; federal, state and agency rules & regulations
- Drugs & Drug Products – approx. 23%
- Drug classification, dosage forms, brand & generic drug names
- Dispensing Process – approx. 52%
