Certification for Adult, Pediatric and Neonatal Critical Care Nurses CCRN is a specialty certification for nurses who
provide direct care to acutely/critically ill patients, either Adult, pediatric, or neonatal regardless of their
physical location. Nurses interested in this certification may work in areas such as intensive care units, cardiac care
units, combined ICU/CCUs, medical/surgical ICUs, trauma units or critical care transport/flight. The CCRN Exams can be
taken year round Monday through Saturday at one of the 200 AMP testing sites across the US. You must have with you two
forms of identifications to take the exam. The 3-hour CCRN exam contains 150 items; 125 items are scored and 25 are used
to gather statistical data on item performance for future exams. The items are based on the AACN Synergy Model for
Patient Care, with 80% focusing on Clinical Judgment and 20% focusing on Professional Caring and Ethical
Practice.
A current, unencumbered U.S. RN or APRN license is required for the CCRN tests. An unencumbered license is not currently being subjected to formal discipline by any state board of nursing and has no provisions or conditions that limit the nurse’s practice in any way. Candidates must complete one of the following clinical practice hour requirement options:
Two year option:
Practice as an RN or APRN for 1,750 hours in direct care of acutely/critically ill patients, either Adult, pediatric, or neonatal during the previous two years, with 875 of those hours accrued in the most recent year preceding application
Five year option:
Practice as an RN or APRN for at least five years with a minimum of 2,000 hours in direct care of acutely/critically ill patients, either Adult, pediatric, or neonatal with 144 of those hours accrued in the most recent year preceding application
